Wheaton Traffic Box Art Wraps
Thanks to a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) to Peijisan Art, Wheaton now has traffic box art wraps at two prominent intersections.
The art designs were created by Caryn Chavarria (pictured above left) and Brianna Pippens in response to a call to artists from Wheaton Arts Parade (WAP). Each artist received a $1,000 commission for their designs. The wraps were produced and installed by Timsco Graphics.
The artists clearly were inspired by suggestions from the Wheaton community about the kind of messages and images the traffic boxes should communicate, such as:

Community, diversity, culture, and family

The beauty of our local nature, and
-
High quality art that elevates the neighborhood.
You can see their traffic box art in person at the corner of Veirs Mill Rd and Grandview Ave, the entrance to the Wheaton Triangle, and at the corner of Prichard Rd and Georgia Ave, the entrance to downtown Wheaton. Look for a third location to appear in the near future with a design that is being created by Peijisan Art.
BACKGROUND
Wheaton Arts Parade and Peijisan Art collaborated to bring a new public art project to Wheaton, MD. The project planned to cover traffic signal boxes in three prominent locations in Wheaton with graphic art designed by local artists. The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) “Public Art Across Maryland” program funded the planning process through a grant to Peijisan Art.
4 local artists were selected as semi-finalists from among the artists who responded to the Request for Qualifications:

Each semi-finalist was awarded a $500 commission to create a custom design for a traffic box. Members of the Wheaton community were invited to choose their 2 favorite designs. The community's preferences guided the project managers in selecting the winning designs by Caryn Chavarria and Brianna Pippens who will receive an additional commission of $500. These two designs, along with a design by Peijisan Art, will be installed on traffic boxes located at the intersections of University Blvd & Veirs Mill Rd, Veirs Mill Rd & Reedie Dr, and Georgia Ave & Prichard Rd pending approval by the State Highway Administration. The designs are being applied to templates for printing on adheisve vinyl by Timsco Graphics. Timsco also will apply the artwork to the traffic boxes.
